Print preview from the web

The censhare 4.7 print preview really gives users the feeling of paging through an edition of a publication. The pages are displayed quickly, attractively and in high quality. The preview can be called up from anywhere in a web browser.

With just a link, the edition can be viewed in a web browser via print preview. Quickly and easily readers page through the entire magazine which is displayed in the highest quality. The appearance is like that of the print edition. Readers view the contents in the manner they are accustomed to from the magazine. No additional effort is required for the Internet version, which is available when the edition is produced. All this is enabled by the new print preview in censhare 4.7.

The preview is entirely based on HTML5 and draws on functions that are only implemented in censhare and aptly exemplifies what is possible with the system.

  • Making the print edition conveniently available to users over the Internet

A large window in the print preview displays a single or double page of the layout in high resolution. Below it the user sees a second window with thumbnails of all the pages of the layout. For better orientation, the tool displays them all slightly transparent, except for the one in the upper window.

In order to display the individual pages of the print edition, censhare uses the PDFs of the preview with Adobe InDesign, if these are available. This ensures a correspondingly high quality of the pages. Otherwise jpeg images are used.

censhare generates the print view with the help of XSLT (XSL Transformation). All the files and XML data necessary for the edition are also compiled with the help of XSLT.

censhare produces the thumbnails from the preview images using ImageKick transformations. Navigation in the print view, like "next page", is implemented by way of Javascript. All the necessary XSLT and Javascript programs are stored in the censhare system as resource assets.

In order to call up the print preview for an edition, censhare uses REST (REpresentational State Transfer) for the path. This allows the print view to be called up in a browser after the user has logged into their account on the censhare system via REST. The standard browser of the operating system is used for the display. Under Windows, this is the Internet Explorer, while the Mac OS X uses Safari.
